How students access technology today

Image
Image source: https://x.com/TheTicketingBiz/status/494469316398817280 The above image shows how generations perceive technology through the ages. This is interesting to me to look at because I notice in my own family how technology has changed and how each of us perceive it. My dad would be a baby boomer and he is actually pretty good with some technology. Far better than his friends. However, he works still and need to keep up with the times. My sister would be Gen X and again is good with technology. She needs to keep up for her job and her kids. Myself and brothers are Gen Y. I would say I am pretty good with technology and using it in my everyday life, especially at work when I am teaching. My older brother is far superior when it comes to knowing technology and how to utilize it. He keeps up with every new thing and is able to help his whole family with troubles. He is often helping his brother-in-law with his technology issues. Which brings me to discussing Gen Z. They...

Active Listening

Image
(image source:  https://kidsenglishthailand.org/blog/an-insight-into-active-learning )  The above link is a really awesome resource on active learning! Active learning is a teaching method that involves the students actively participating in the learning process, rather than passively listening and learning. Active learning is becoming more common now with the use of technology and engaging the students. Instead of creating a slide deck and reading it word for word to your students, try creating a slide deck that has breakout times for students to discuss the topic and how they interpret it. As I learned from the module in class there are several different strategies that are housed under active learning. Looking through this list , the first one that popped out at me was picture prompts. A picture prompt can be defined as showing a picture to your students without giving an answer and have them identify it and justify their answers. This strategy gets the students enga...

Mapping your digital space

Image
This is what my digital space looks like. Very categorized, like my life and apps on my phone. On my phone I have everything in groupings like: money, social, car, work, school, etc. I like to be organized and not have to search through a million pages just to find what I want. This describes my dads and brother phone. Every time I go on their phones I practically have a panic attack. The disorganization is real with them. When finding the apps I use for each category it was actually hard to think what I truly use. I am sure there are more but I cannot think of them or they weren't important enough to make the cut. All the apps in my map are apps I use on the regular. I frequent Facebook, snapchat and dating apps the most. Yet I do not have notifications on for Facebook. I check it once daily, maybe post something but otherwise I am passively scrolling through. I use Gmail and google slides the most daily for work. I have my email up all day at work and then check it when I get h...

Trends in Educational Technology

Image
Let's get TRENDY Image source: Google image Trendy Tech in todays society and how we can use it in school to better the learning experience. This is something I am thinking about constantly in my classroom. It is also something that is talked about more in school after the pandemic hit. How to engage the student. Why not use technology! There are so many cool teaching techs out there like: peardeck, edpuzzle, kahoot, IXL, and boomcards to name a few. When I was teaching in high school I gravitated towards IXL for math and boomcards was in everything! I still use boomcards in my transition program. It was a fun and engaging way to teach the concept. Image source: google image IXL is a tool that I used for all my math classes when I was teaching high school. It brought about independency in my students and it made my life easier because I wasn't always teaching at them, they got to be involved.  IXL is a math, reading, social studies and science interactive program. It has pr...

Technology in the classroom

Image
Technology in the classroom Image source: google image For this assignment I chose to look at the TPACK model. I believe it relates most closely with the age range of the students I teach and how I use technology in my classroom. What is TPACK? Image source: tpack.org TPACK stands for Technology, Pedagogy, Content Knowledge. This means we as instructors are connecting technology, pedagogy and content knowledge in our instructions. So to break this down using one of my lessons. I teach a personal development class. In this class we combine knowledge of a career the students would like to do when they age out, technology to look up this career and the teaching of how to research the topic and then share what they have learned.  For the lesson, I start with the content. What am I teaching and what is my students knowledge of the content. I start out by introducing the topic: what is a job, what are some examples of jobs and remind the students of prior teaching of each job. Then...
